Introduced in 1986 as the Australian Gold Nugget, it predates the equally popular Australian Silver Kookaburra by four years and uses the same approach to coin design. The Perth Mint issues mintage caps to each of the three fractional-weight Australian Gold Kangaroo coins. While the 1 oz and 1 Kilo coins have unlimited mintage figures through the end of 2020, the fractional-weight coins have limits. The 1/4 oz Gold Kangaroo has long been capped at just 150,000 coins per year.

Demand for the 1/4 oz Australian Gold Kangaroo has dropped significantly in recent years. From 2015 to 2018, the 1/4 oz Gold Kangaroo saw sales figures hover around 25,000 coins per year. The peak sales figure in this period came in 201 when sales totaled 26,613 coins. In 2019, the 1/4 oz Gold Kangaroo dropped sharply to a total of just 11,220 coins.

On the reverse of 2020 1/4 oz Australian Gold Kangaroo Coins is the image of two red kangaroos. In the foreground, there is an adult kangaroo standing on its hind legs and balancing with its powerful tail. The kangaroo is alert to any threats around with its ears perked and eyes fixed on an object in the distance. In the background, there is a smaller joey standing nearby on the grassy plains.

The obverse of 2020 Australian Gold Kangaroo Coins features the latest effigy of Queen Elizabeth II for Australian coins. The right-profile portrait featured here was created for Australian coinage by Jody Clark and is the first on an Australian coin since 1966 to include the Her Majestys neckline and shoulders in the portrait.
