The South African Gold Krugerrand coin is the only major gold bullion coin in the world without an announced or marked face value. The coin does, however, have legal tender status in South Africa. Its position as a legal tender coin is guaranteed under the South African Reserve Bank Act of 1989.

Another unique facet of the South African Gold Krugerrand is its metallic composition. The Gold Krugerrand has 22-karat gold content, just like the American Gold Eagle. However, the South African Mint wanted a durable gold coin for production and chose a different metallic alloy in addition to gold. Both the Gold Krugerrand and Gold Eagle have 91.67% gold by weight, but the Krugerrand has 8.33% copper while the Gold Eagle uses 5.33% copper and 3% silver in its remaining alloy.
