The American Platinum Eagle coin is the official platinum bullion coin of the United States government. The federal government backs the purity, weight, and metal content of each and every Platinum Eagle produced by the United States Mint. The coins in this program were first introduced in 1997 and feature the same image on the obverse and reverse side of the coin each year, but only in the bullion program. John Mercanti, the US Mint chief engraver responsible for the reverse design of the American Silver Eagle coin, designed the obverse image used on the American Platinum Eagle coin. The word LIBERTY is stretched along the top of the coin and accompanied by the engravings of the year of minting and the phrase In God We Trust.

On the reverse side is the image of a bald eagle soaring over the setting sun.
